I think it does too, although I am not sure because after I set up the 
http_proxy the applet did not work, and as I retried yesterday it  went 
to work perfectly.
One thing to try would be to set $http_proxy in a shell, then run a new 
shell and launch the applet in command-line to see its behaviour...
