grub was gone! What happened?

This morning i fire up my pc at job and grub has gone. Good morning. :)

Not a big issue. I put first cdrom from fc1, type a 'linux rescue', a
chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/hda. It works again.

Now i wonder: what has happened? Not really familiar with this kind of
logs, but where can i have a look and try to realize what happened to
grub? It is important that i get an idea of what has happened: this is
my job pc, i pushed so hard to be able to run fc1 and now i loose my
boot loader. 

I didn't do anything specific yesterday, only installed and tested a bit
f-prot. 

Any idea about what logs might help?
