I have a similar problem, but up2date works fine, No hanging.
Nevertheless, when I check my up2date.log (/var/log/up2date)
I see the following entries:

[Wed Feb 18 02:21:17 2004] up2date Error communicating with server. The
message was:

arch='i686-redhat-linux')
If you have a registration number, please register with it first at
http://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/ and then try again.

Error Class Info: Architecture and OS version combination is not supported.
Explanation:
     An error has occurred while processing your request. If this problem
     persists please enter a bug report at bugzilla.redhat.com.

I used to have a RH8 entitlement, no longer. I upgraded this box, it was not
a clean install.
