Did you try a tcpdump? You might see dns packets, etc before the attempted
access, which can give some idea of why the hang.
Another idea coming from a different driection: grep ~ and /etc for
128.129.137 and also for some fragment of the reverse dns name of
128.129.137.yy. Gnumeric must be remembering that specific machine from
somewhere.
