server set to allow you to write?

Yes
Root can create/remove directories at will


It does not matter if root can create/remove at will. The question was (implied) if the user could do that.
Permissions/user masking are interrelated.


Here is the fstab line:
//Marco/TEST	/mnt/marco	smbfs	username=uname,password=pword	0 0
