How to turn off the beep

I am using Fedora Core release 1 in ASCII mode on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. In certain situations, e.g. when I hit the backspace key at the beginning of a command line, it generates a very annoying beep. Is there any way to turn this beeping feature off?
