This was the first time I ran yum. I am extremely new to linux; however, you have literally proven how the Socratic method of answering a question by asking questions is still highly efficient. I did some quick editing of yum.conf and removed a few things. It seems to have improved the situation considerably. Thank you for the push in the right direction.
