Gnome desktop icons

Gnone has put icons on my desktop for various mounted partitions. I
would like to remove these icons, but have not figured out how. The
right-click preferences seems to want to unmount the partitions, which
is NOT what I want. I can't find any tool from the Gnome button that
seems to reference desktop icons. I've poked around the dot files in my
home directory but haven't found anything concrete. How do I control
what Gnome puts on my desktop?
Thanks!
