problems booting up

I have been using fedora core 1 with kernel 2.4.22-1.2140 athlon , with
great success for about two weeks . but today when I try and boot up the
machine I get the following message "INIT: id "x" respawning too
fast:disabled for 5 minutes" . Then the machine just sits there. Can anybody
help , I am new to Linux so idiot guide please.
