Gimp Font Issue

I'm trying to add text to an image in the Gimp (gimp-1.2.5-1). After I
select a font, I get a lot of messages about how it can't find the
font I selected. E.g: Helvetica bold ISO-10646-1 12 pt. It does find
some fonts, but of those I have tried, it finds about
1/4. Suggestions?
