I had a similar problem, and it turned out (embarrasingly) to be due to
my experimenting with the new gnome accessibility features. Look in
"Preferences -> Accessibility" and make sure this is turned off.
I also found a bug logged that may match your problem - have a look at:

Do you get the same problem when using KDE, or when logging into Gnome
as a different user?
