Xine broke mplayer?

Not really but mplayer very well may.  Run it from a terminal and see if
its outputting any errors.  mplayer prints reams of debugging
information.

mplayer will use XINE, XMMS, and other CODEC plugins.  Also, most
players which support AVI will load Windows CODEC DLLs from
/usr/lib/win32.  So, there are several ways they can interact.
