Volume control under KDE

Hi.
I don't seem to be able to find the volume control In KDE.
I can find various sound systems like aRTs where I can play test sound.
I can even start a CD playing and just about hear it with the laptop
physical volume control right up.
The only vol control I have found is the Bell settings which is
available if I click the use sys bell box when tested it is very loud
until turned down to 1% and off at 0%.
Help please
Acer 508 laptop FC1 dual boot win98 sound OK.
Same problem if booted straight into FC1 from switch on.
