modem probs

...hav another problem ..the system hangs when it
tries to bringup the modem-----
1)how do I disable/rectify the modem
2)how do i  initiate a dialup useing a modem in Linux
FC 1.I am using a dialup connection.I mean where do I
get the dialer and how to start it...does smthin as in
