Fedora 2 Desktop Performance

I have a fedora 2 machine running on a PII 400 with 325meg of Ram.  
Since I rebuilt the box from FC1 it has felt sluggish and not as fast.  
I am running xfce4 and a mixture of Gnome and KDe applications. 
I thought that the 2.6 kernel was ment to be slicker but there is a 
noticeable lag when I click on an icon.  I even have had rhythembox 
stall on me which is something I never had on FC1.

What settings could I chose to get a better response for a desktop box.
