I like my xterms with a black background also. Fedora comes with two separate
DIRCOLORS files, one for xterms and one for everything else. These two files
are easily overridden with a file in your home directory.
cp /etc/DIR_COLORS ~/.dircolors
This will make all terminals use the bright colors that stand out on a dark
background.
