I read your email more carefully right after I sent my reply and saw the

 echo "AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK=yes" >> etc/sysconfig/autofsck

I like your way better.  :)

I seem to remember a file that is listed whenever you do a mkfs. In the
file, you can set the number of mounts before the filesys will be
automatically checked. I can't remember where that is. Next time I do a
mkfs I will write it down.

(It's interesting what my spell-checker wants to replace fsck with.)
