No, you haven't.

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

This should print you out the attached devices. In /proc/scsi you find
more information about your SCSI subsystem.
I suspect you run Fedora on the SCSI harddrive. Run "sane-find-scanner"
to see if the sane backend finds your scanner. The HP4C is well
supported.

Your system should load the kernel module named aic7xxx for your
adapter. Run "lsmod | grep aic".
