installing kernel 2.6.4 on (not over) 2.4

Hi,
sorry for usual topic, I only need to specify my situation.
When I try to add Arjan's repository to yum.conf, it wants to install also
mkinitrd-3.5.15.1-2 and modutils-2.4.26-9.
Should update these packages when I want to install kernel (not upgrade)?
I have kernel-2.4.22-1.2174 installed and do want to still use it.
But I want to give a try 2.6 baby.
