Is there no administrator for the firewall and proxy? I suspect you are
building the PC systems for customers, so the network admin should
assist you to be able to go through the walls to have up2date systems.

You know linuxprinting.org? Unfortunately you did not post the model
name. If it is no Windows[tm]-only GDI printer it should work with
kernel 2.4 too. I do not see what the kernel has to do with the printer
job as this is user space.

See http://dag.wieers.com/packages/ for Dag's additional kernel
packages. Here you too no provide us with a specific model name. I
believe you do not really want help from the list.

Having driver source you should unpack it and read files like INSTALL
and README which are in most cases part of the tarball.

I fear you will destroy your system partly (KDE will be damaged). But
it's your go.

Did you check the hardware data and what is set in software? What does
hdparm tell you about the settings (DMA mode etc.)? Which mp3 encoder do
you use with which parameters?
