root vs user

Thanks Mitch for your advice. I'll follow it: I've always logged in as root!

As for my GUI I'm using Gnome.

I suspect that I have to make some kind of link (I don't know how to do 
that), but if so, should I always link the applications (folders) for 
every user I'll setup?
