the old one:

[root muckla boot]# mount -o loop /dev/fd0 /mnt/test
[root muckla boot]# ll /mnt/test

I've heard that fc1 kernel doesn't fit in floppy, this might be the case.
You could make a small /boot partition at the very beginning of the disk so you can boot without boot disks.
