This I never had to contend with -- upgrading with a new architecture.
But switching over with a generic kernel should not cause problems since
they are compiled to run on anything.
My guess would be rpm -Uvh --nodeps BUT the modules and libs may well
not be compatible -- this I do not know.
Can you compile and install your own kernel from source?
