memtest86 is a handy utility to run from the installer "boot:" prompt. I
thought I was having the ASUS problem mentioned for P4P800 boards. But, when
I ran memtest86, it immediately began showing memory errors. If I had "quick
test" disabled in my bios's boot options, I would have seen I had bad
memory.

Not necessarily. Most BIOS memory testers even in "SLOW" mode are very incomplete and do not found memory problems that memtest86+ does.
