What happens if you move/delete the .gnome* .gconf* in ~ and let
gnome start all over again (after the upgrades)?

For a while I couldn't even upgrade libgnome and libgnome-devel,
because of an endless list of conflict messages. I changed the mirror
(now it's mirrors.kernel.org) and cleaned up /var/spool/up2date
and all was well. Still is.
