lpd - printing

This is really annoying.

LPRng is what I want but the rpm's out there won't install. I'll have to
try building my own. It's been around for years, don't know why fedora
dropped it.

I currently have raw print queues in my printcap (linux is my server) and
the winxp clients have their own drivers, linux is simply a spooler which
is exactly what I want.

I tried cups as an xinetd deamon(cups-lpd) and as the service cups
When I run lp filename i get "lp: error - scheduler not responding!"
