Just a best guess, but the way I understood

   http://dovecot.org/doc/dovecot-example.conf

the lines should look like this

   auth userdb = mysql /etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf
   auth passdb = mysql /etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf

with a blank between auth and userdb/passdb.

Check

   doc/dovecot-mysql.conf

for more information on that.
