w shows 0 users

Has anyone seen this before:

 ~ $ w
 23:19:52  up 10 days, 20:25,  0 users,  load average: 1.40, 1.22, 1.00
USER     TTY      FROM              LOGIN@   IDLE   JCPU   PCPU  WHAT



For some reason, no users show up. What does w read off of? Something in
/proc? Any fix?
