Instant messenger on Linux

Has anyone tried to use Yahoo IM on Linux, with a proxy. I am unable to
set one. I have tried to set one via export however it doesn't use this
proxy location. If no one uses Yahoo IM, is there a Linux alternative
that will talk to Yahoo?
