Actually, it's a bit more complicated than all that.  I believe this has
been discussed before, so a search of the archives would probably find
additional information, but let me summarize my take on it....

The developer of pilot-link has been putting together a new version
dubbed 0.12, but this new version has a new API.  Now pilot-link
provides the low-level routines for several high level packages, like
jpilot, gnome-pilot, etc.  While the developers of those other pieces
are aware of the new 0.12 API, most are still just starting to re-write
their code to utilize it, and do not generally have a timeline.  Also,
the developer of pilot-link has been pretty emphatic that no
distribution should be shipping 0.12 of his code yet, until everyone has
ample time to "catch up".

So, I suppose the mistake, if you want to call it that, is that the
packagers for Fedora Core 4, saw the new version of pilot-link and since
we're the bleeding edge, decided to include it on the distribution.  Of
course, this then breaks all the packages that run on top of it.

At the moment, the question becomes, do we as users, and does the Fedora
package maintainer take the step back and put us back on 0.11 of
pilot-link or try to help the other code "catch up" to the new
interface.  I believe they are trying the second approach, but it is an
awful lot of work hence the huge pause in delivery.  Of course, going
backwards can create a lot of dependency issues as there are a bunch of
packages that utilize the pilot-link API....

Add to this the fact that the evolution conduits that ship with
evolution (but use gnome-pilot which in turn uses pilot-link) have had
their own set of issues/brokenness and there's lots of confusion running
around.

Also the myriad of connectivity capabilities for Palm based devices
always introduces some fun with udev and some pesky USB issues that are
intermittently hitting different releases of the kernel, apparently....

So I think all the responses in this thread have had merit and the OP
will need to determine how they want to progress....

Personally I am just using the "new" pilot-link to perform backups of my
Palm and ignoring the synchronization capabilities with Evolution, that
I used to rely on in FC3.....   And, I'm trying to relax and learn how
to spell P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E..... :-)  Hopefully I'll have full sync'ing
again soon (looks like updates-testing has a new gnome-pilot - hmmmm,
something to play with this weekend???)....
