Is SATA hard drive supported by Fedora?

Sorry, perhaps slightly OT: When I tried to install FC4 on SATA (nv),
anaconda used libata and the nv driver. Libata doesn't allow smartctl to
read the smart HD data. Do you know how I can use the usual ide driver
wich also should support SATA?
