I am embarrassed. I gave similar advice as the lines above but I
guess I was not completely awake. If you try this solution which has
always worked for me in these situations there are some lines
missing in the list of commands. So for those who want to try this it
should read:
grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

In the documentation this is the first m,method presented for saving
the grub boot in the MBR.
