Did I make a mistake in starting with Fedora Core 4?

You didn't make a mistake if FC4 works for your hardware.  The 
assumption you made about FC4 being more stable than FC3 being more 
stable than FC2 ... etc is not correct.  Each of these releases 
should be considered independent of any of the others.  When a 
release hits the streets there may be many hardware combinations 
that can cause problems, as well as other glitches, that still need 
to be ironed out and generally the longer a release has been out in 
the public, the more stable it is.  Keep in mind that Fedora is 
released according to a schedule based more on the calendar than on 
readiness or stability.

To the best of my knowledge there is no downgrade path from FC4 to 
FC3, you'd have to re-install FC3 from scratch.
