Windows XP Home doesn't support Remote Desktop/Terminal Services.

I'd set your bootloader to boot into Linux by default and use VNC. Once
your granddaughter has finished playing The Sims, you can connect to
your XP Home box via VNC and reboot it.

http://www.sysinternals.com/, specifically "PsShutdown".
