Problems in mysql start, premissions ?

I am trying to install mysql 4.1 and seeing the errors below in the log
files.
I have searched the faq's etc but not found a fix.  
Anyone know what the issue could be.

Fedora Core 3

[root at zedge log]# /etc/init.d/mysql start

[root at zedge log]# mysql
