web proxy auto detect?

I see that Firefox seems to support auto-detecting the web proxy. How do 
I configure that on the server end? My dhcp is served from a 
router/modem device and doesn't seem to support such a setting. I do run 
my own nameserver (bind). Can anyone give me any help? Is there no way 
to just put the proxy address without running some stupid Javascript 
function to supply it?
