If that doesn't give any useful results, repeat the trick this time with

strace kate

on the commandline.  Strace shows you all the system calls your usermode
process is making, so you can expect a spew at the beginning.  The last
calls made before it drops dead is worth examining carefully for File
Not Found or other kinds of error to get a clue.
