audio issues

I'm having problems with getting audio to work properly on the system.
The system is running FC5 (2.6.17-1.2157_FC) the sound card is (lspci -v):

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: Jetway Information Co., Ltd. Unknown device 4170
        Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 11
        I/O ports at e000 [size=256]
Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2

The sound card had worked previously under a FC3 (maybe FC4?) system in
the past. This board is built onto the M/B.

My /etc/modprobe.conf file reads:
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-via82xx index=0
remove snd-via82xx { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; };
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-via82xx

The above was installed via system-config-soundcard

What happens is the audio seems to stutter or echo when trying to play
audio. sometimes just repeating a note forever.

suggestions?

Thanks, Jeff
