question about FC3 update kernel

Hi,

I try to update the kernel 2.6.10 on
my FC3. I use "make defconfig" and 
then add some Filesystem modules and
usb drivers. Build the kernel ok. 
but when I reboot and try to load my
new kernel. It failed and the message 
like this:

...
Warning unabel to open an initial console...

the grub.conf is like this:

...
title Fedora Core (2.6.10)
        root
(hd0,7)
        kernel
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10 ro root=/dev/hda8 rhgb 
        initrd
/boot/initrd-2.6.10.img
...

I have no idea about why this hanppened
and what I could do now?
