Linpopup replacement?

Hi all,
I'm resurrecting some shell scripts I wrote years ago, that use the
"smbclient -M"/linpopup mechanism to display message pop-ups on the
desktop. The scripts are meant to be run as cron jobs and won't be able
to connect to the X server directly.

I want to get away from SMB, firstly because linpopup isn't a FC
component, secondly because I don't want to depend on Samba being
installed and running.

What are the preferred mechanisms in FC5 to achieve this? Something
around DBus? What would be a typical tool chain? I admit I'm a bit
overwhelmed atm by the DBus docs (and my failure to get examples from
man pages to work).

Cheers
Steffen.
