Maybe your 54.0 for maximal horizontal sync rate is too low.
Try an higher value or comment out all your copies of HorizSync
and VertRefresh lines to force the autodetection.

If you have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, you will find
what's happening to the 1024x768 modes; they're probably all
discarded because of out of range problems for sync frequencies.

NOTE: driving the monitor with a too high horizsync could
damage the monitor, but I think that actually this only applies
to monitors built more than ten years ago.
