CD Burner permissions

In my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, I have the entry:

chmod 666 /dev/hdd

I don't claim to be the best administrator, but it seems to work. It 
would be interesting to hear what people that know more about this 
subject think of this simple minded solution.
