JRE - Could not create the java virtual machine

downloaded the latest JRE from java.com ... unzipped to /opt/jre1.5.0_06 .... edited .bashrc to set the JAVA_HOME, CLASSPATH, etc ... 

try to execute "java --version" and I get "Could not create the java virtual machine"

Java on linux just drives me nutty ... what can I check?
