How do I get my disk powered down gracefully on my desktop during system shutdown

ctl-alt-del is controlled by /etc/inittab, just change to this
# Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -h now
Now it will shutdown instead of rebooting.
