Yes. The bug was very obscure and hard to hit anyway, but yes it got fixed.

Also, is compiz installed by default? Does it do the cube? :)

Yes, but it's not enabled by default. To enable it, go to Preferences ->Desktop Effects. It's known to work very reliably with the open-sourceradeon driver. For other drivers, I don't know.
