Even then, they were still pipped at the post by other OSs long before
then for GUI systems, networking, file systems, etc.  There's only one
thing I'd accept Microsoft patenting - their blue screen of death (which
always sounds like an Doctor Who story title from the Tom Baker era, to
me).  ;-)
