Qemu can emulate a lot of different hardware (arm, mips, etc.), and also
as a kernel module, kqemu, recently oss'ed. With it, there is no longer
interpretation of all instructions.
But I don't think the performance gains aren't comparable to vmware yet,
though I have no data to prove it.
