Thanks, I found that out.  But I see several other submenu's in the kmenu have 
been similarly stripped too, so I'm still wondering how one goes about 
restoring the kmenu.  I was under the impression that this was kbuildsycoca's 
territory, but a run of that by hand only gets me a message that its re-using 
the old one.

Also, several items in the menu no longer work, such as that gentoo file 
manager.

"Games" is down to one big list, having lost its subcategories,  "Edutainment" 
now has only 2 subcategories with one item each.
