Can I rename a user??

It sounds like you have nothing on the machine that you care about.
Just do a fresh install keeping all of the defaults.  I watch TV while
the install is humming.  Better yet, do it in front of them so they can
see that even an idiot ( me ) can do it.  

As to your question, I think 'usermod -l alpha beta' should do the
trick.
