tim at elizabeth ~]$ wmctrl -r 7 ssh alfred
[tim at elizabeth ~]$ sudo wmctrl -r 7 ssh alfred

wmctrl will switch the active workspace for you, but will not exec programs:
here is an example of how to start an ssh session on workspace 2
this uses gnome, so you will have to modify for kde

#!/bin/sh
wmctrl -s 2
gnome-terminal --geometry 120x25+0-28 --title=ssh_win  --command='ssh alfred'&
